Youth & Family Ice Fishing Tournament

Test your ice fishing skills – and your luck – on the frozen waters of Carson’s Bay on Saturday, February 19. Last year participants caught over 250 fish!!

Prizes will be awarded by age group and there will be a grand prize for the biggest catch of the day. Fishing Guide, Kolt Ringer and other local fisherman will be available for questions and to support the event. A limited amount of ice fishing rods, reels, bait, and other equipment will be available. Please bring your own equipment if possible.

Please visit www.minnetonkacommunityed.org for information on what to bring and what to expect. Parents should stay and assist their children. Please dress warmly and bring a chair and camera!

Carson’s Bay of Lake Minnetonka will be the location for the 3rd Annual Lake Minnetonka Kids Ice Fishing Challenge. Anglers between the ages of seven and seventeen will converge on ice to compete in an ice fishing derby. The event will be hosted by Minnetonka Community Education and Fishtonka Guide Service. We are seeking partnerships within the fishing industry to help make the event a success. The primary objective of the contest will be to open the doors to the vast ice fishing opportunities that Lake Minnetonka can provide to both experienced youth ice fishers and a new generation of ice anglers. The event will also provide sponsorship opportunities for businesses to donate monetary or in kind services prior to, during, and following the event.

The popularity of ice fishing and the advances in the sport have grown exponentially in the past ten years. This can be seen in the number of ice fishing anglers and the number of contests held for ice fishing adults. Based on the past success of a summer program, “Hooked on Fishing”, two ice fishing versions of the kids clinics, and two successful youth ice fishing tournaments hosted by Minnetonka Community Education and local fishing guides, the idea of continuing to grow the event was an easy decision. The previous two tournaments were a huge success and we are looking forward to another exciting tournament.

The event will be held on February 20, from 10AM-12PM on Carsons Bay of Lake Minnetonka. This year a new optional tournament registration, meal, and ice fishing seminar will be hosted by Minnetonka Community Education on Friday, Feb. 19th. The contest will be limited to the first seventy five youth to register for the event through Minnetonka Community Education. Holes will be pre-drilled, some equipment and bait will be provided, and the young anglers will be required to fish in a pre-determined area of the bay. Parents, volunteers, a host of local fishing guides, and other key ice fishing industry leaders will be supervising and providing assistance during the tournament. The event will be a catch and release format, with the young anglers measuring their fish caught and then releasing them immediately back in the water. An official awards ceremony and raffle will conclude the on ice event.

The tournament will need sponsor support for direct costs, prizes, and event maintenance. Both Fishtonka and Minnetonka Community Education organizers will make every effort to showcase and market participating businesses and their products to the community and participants attending the tournament festivities through print, broadcast and other media at a local, and a regional level.

· There will be a minimum of 20 volunteers, including local fishing guides, parents, and other community members.

Two first time hunters bagged bucks on their first season deer hunting and one old veteran with a dandy as well! A good time was had by all and the deer in the Park Rapids area are going to have a couple more guys chasing them in future years to come.

Doug Warren and Larry Hanson have been working the corporate business and having some great luck bass fishing with their customers. Primarly working the outside weedlines with a jig worm for the action.

Paul Sladek is reporting that he is getting most of his bass on the inside weeline and running into some decent pike over in the milfoil.

Tim and KC of 100.3 KTLK FM Outoor Talk will have a good show coming up on Sunday be sure to tune in and get some more updated reports and information.

Hello Anglers,

The 30th Annual Minnetonka Classic Bass Tournament was a huge success with a record setting field of 137 teams/boats. With someone weighing in a bag of 8 fish totaling 31.12 just four days earlier in another tournament on Lake Minnetonka we thought we would be awarding someone the big bonus check. Unfortunately no one got the 30.30 or over 30.30 bag, but it was tough fishing. We are looking forward to doing something similar next year. We are seriously thinking of having a "fall classic next year. Also the date for the 31st Annual Minnetonka Classic will be June 5th 2010. The average ice out date for Lake Minnetonka is April 15th. I am prediciting the ice to be out by the end of next week and the big crappies will be on a feeding freenzy before retreating out to the depths and then moving back in to spawn. Take advantage of the early spring bite and if your competative, you don't have to wait for the "Crappie Contest" to fish a tournament.
